João Cancelo's loan spell at FC Barcelona is approaching its conclusion — and according to reports from Tribuna and multiple Catalan sources, the Portuguese full-back has made it abundantly clear where he wants to be next season.

Cancelo, 31, initially joined on loan from Manchester City earlier in the season and quickly established himself as an important component of Hansi Flick's system — offering attacking thrust from right-back, a high defensive line and the technical quality to play out from the back that Flick's style demands. His return from injury ahead of the Newcastle second leg was greeted with genuine warmth by his teammates, with Pau Cubarsí singling him out in his pre-match press conference for the mentorship he provided when the teenage defender first broke into the team.

The stumbling block, as ever, is financial. Manchester City's wage structure means Cancelo is on significant earnings that Barcelona, with their La Liga salary cap restrictions, cannot simply match. However, the player is said to be willing to take a meaningful pay cut to make the permanent transfer viable — a gesture that Barcelona's board are likely to view positively given the financial discipline it signals.

Barcelona sporting director Deco is understood to be working through the options. A straight purchase, a reduced fee with adjusted wages, or even another loan with an option to buy are all scenarios being considered. For Cancelo, the situation is straightforward: Camp Nou is home, and he wants to stay.
