The Bastoni story has been building for months. Now it is official — at least at the player level.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Barcelona have already opened talks with the representatives of Alessandro Bastoni, Inter Milan's 26-year-old Italian centre-back, and that the player is open to joining the club this summer. Deco, Barcelona's sporting director, has reportedly been in contact with Bastoni's camp over the last four to five months, making repeated trips to maintain the relationship.
The key quote from Romano: "For Barcelona, there are no doubts about the quality of Alessandro Bastoni as a player after what he's shown with Inter Milan in recent years."
Why Bastoni
Hansi Flick has identified the left-footed centre-back as his priority defensive signing this summer. The reasoning is clear: Barcelona currently play with an aggressive high defensive line that demands ball-playing ability from the back. Bastoni — who reads the game exceptionally, carries the ball with authority and distributes with the composure of a midfielder — fits the profile precisely.
The plan is to pair him with Pau Cubarsí, forming a long-term left-footed and right-footed centre-back partnership that could anchor Barcelona's defence for the next five to seven years.
Inter's Price Tag
Here is where it gets complicated. Inter Milan regard Bastoni as one of their most important players and have no interest in selling cheaply. Romano confirmed that a fee in excess of £43.5 million — over €50 million — will not be enough to even begin negotiations.
Multiple Italian sources place Inter's true asking price between €70 million and €80 million. Corriere dello Sport have reported that only a "staggering" offer would convince Inter to sanction the sale.
Barcelona's financial constraints make a straight cash deal difficult. The alternative being explored is a player-plus-cash package, with Ferran Torres emerging as the most viable makeweight. Inter have reportedly expressed interest in the Spain forward, who has contributed 16 goals in 40 appearances this season but is out of contract in 2027. Including Torres would reduce the cash portion of any deal significantly.
Dani Olmo has also been mentioned in reports, though his commitment to the Barcelona project makes that option considerably less realistic.
Bastoni's Situation at Inter
The timing may favour Barcelona. Bastoni's season has not been without controversy — a costly red card in a World Cup qualifier and a much-discussed incident in the Derby d'Italia have brought negative headlines. While he remains a world-class defender, the noise around him has softened his previously untouchable status at San Siro.
Inter are simultaneously exploring potential replacements, holding talks with the agent of Arsenal's Riccardo Calafiori as a contingency if Bastoni departs.
The Timeline
Barcelona want to open formal club-to-club talks with Inter after the season ends. A decision on their financial position — including potential player sales — will determine exactly what package they can put together. The club expects clarity between the end of April and early May.
Bastoni has three years remaining on his Inter contract. The window is now. Barcelona know it. Inter know it. The summer negotiation will be one of the most watched transfers in Europe.
