Manchester City's Premier League title hopes suffered what may prove to be a fatal blow on Saturday evening as a stubborn West Ham United held them to a 1-1 draw at the London Stadium, leaving Pep Guardiola's side nine points behind leaders Arsenal with just nine games remaining.
The timing could not have been worse for City. Just three days after their Champions League dreams were shattered by a 3-0 defeat at the Santiago Bernabéu, a second part of what once looked like a potential quadruple also slipped from their grasp. Guardiola himself had warned in the build-up that dropping points here would effectively end their title challenge — and so it proved, with Arsenal having earlier beaten Everton 2-0 to extend their advantage.
Guardiola watched from the stands, serving a touchline ban, as his side dominated the first half almost entirely. City enjoyed a surreal opening ten minutes in which they completed 94 passes to West Ham's seven and controlled 93 per cent of possession — yet had nothing to show for it. Erling Haaland, who has scored 11 times against West Ham in his career, fluffed an early header at the far post and looked a shadow of his best, struggling through what has become a barren run of just three goals in his last 12 Premier League appearances.
City eventually took the lead in the 31st minute through a moment of accidental brilliance. Bernardo Silva, looking to loft the ball towards Haaland, miscued his cross entirely — and the ball dipped beautifully over the stranded Mads Hermansen and into the net. It was a goal that owed more to fortune than design, but City would take it.
The lead lasted just four minutes. Hermansen — excellent throughout — came to collect a Jarrod Bowen corner but Donnarumma inexplicably flapped at the ball, and Konstantinos Mavropanos, the former Arsenal man, was perfectly positioned to head home from close range. The London Stadium erupted.
The second half told the story of the season for City. They mustered 21 shots in total to West Ham's one, dominated possession and threw everything at Hermansen, who produced save after save — from Haaland, from Cherki, from Reijnders. But the Hammers held firm. It was a performance of raw determination from Nuno Espírito Santo's side, who move a point above the relegation zone as a result.
For Arsenal, this was the perfect afternoon. City are now nine points back with one game in hand, and a summit clash still to come — but the momentum is firmly with the Gunners. Guardiola insisted afterwards that the title race is "not over," but Saturday felt like the day it effectively was.
