Arsenal made it back to the top of the Premier League with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Eberechi Eze's spectacular ninth-minute strike was the only goal. But the result was overshadowed by injuries to both Kai Havertz and Eze himself — two more blows to an already stretched Arsenal squad heading into the most important week of their season.
THE GOAL
Arsenal scored inside nine minutes and it was a beauty. From a corner, Odegaard played short to Havertz, who laid it off to Eze just outside the area. The Crystal Palace academy product took one touch and fired a thunderous, curling shot into the top corner past Nick Pope. A Premier League-quality goal. Eze's 10th of the season and arguably his best.
HOW THE GAME PLAYED OUT
The early goal settled Arsenal but did not kill the game. Newcastle, despite their poor league position, were competitive throughout. Will Osula had a massive chance in the opening seconds — he stumbled trying to connect with a ball in the box and somehow missed from point-blank range. Sandro Tonali smashed a swirling long-range effort in the second half that forced Raya into an uncomfortable save. Yoane Wissa — on as a substitute — went close late on. Arsenal created their own chances too. Gyokeres, introduced after Havertz's injury, forced Pope into a rush-out challenge that earned the goalkeeper a yellow card after a VAR check — red considered but not given. Odegaard received a pass from Saka late on, controlled and shot towards Pope's right post — Pope read it and tipped it over. Seven minutes of stoppage time made it a nervy finish but Arsenal held on.
THE INJURIES
This is the bigger story. Havertz went down in the 33rd minute with an apparent upper leg or groin issue, limped off visibly dejected and was replaced by Gyokeres. He walked straight down the tunnel. Eze — the match-winner — then went off early in the second half with an ankle problem and was replaced by Martinelli. Both players await scan results. Saka returned from the bench, which was the one positive fitness note from the afternoon.

WHAT IT MEANS
Arsenal are back on top — 73 points, three clear of Manchester City who have played one fewer game. Arsenal's remaining fixtures: Fulham (H), West Ham (A), Burnley (H), Crystal Palace (A). City's run-in: FA Cup semi-final today, then Everton (A), Bournemouth (A), Aston Villa (H) — plus their game in hand at Crystal Palace. The title race is not over but Arsenal have the points. The worry now is the injury list — Havertz, Eze, Merino, Timber, Calafiori all out or doubtful. The UCL semi-final first leg at Atletico Madrid is four days away.
