Manchester City are top of the Premier League for the first time this season after a clinical 1-0 win at Turf Moor. Erling Haaland's fifth-minute goal was all it took. The win also confirms Burnley's relegation to the Championship.
THE GOAL
Haaland needed just five minutes to settle City's nerves. Jeremy Doku drove forward and threaded a through ball into the Norwegian's path, and Haaland finished calmly past Martin Dubravka. It was his 25th goal of the season in all competitions and his fourth in four games. After that, the match was effectively decided.
HOW THE GAME PLAYED OUT
City controlled possession throughout, sitting at around 64 percent for the game. They created 15 attempts to Burnley's six, with Dubravka making five saves to keep the scoreline respectable. Burnley had moments β Jaidon Anthony forced a save and Kyle Walker drove forward from right-back on several occasions β but City's defensive structure, with Marc Guehi and Abdukodir Khusanov at centre-back in the absence of Ruben Dias, was rarely troubled. Without Rodri in the engine room, Nico Gonzalez and Bernardo Silva held the midfield shape and City never looked like losing their lead. Rayan Cherki and Doku provided constant width and movement but City were content to manage the game rather than chase a bigger win.
WHAT IT MEANS
City go top of the Premier League on 70 points β level with Arsenal, ahead on goal difference β with four games remaining. Arsenal face Newcastle on Saturday before their Champions League semi-final first leg at Atletico Madrid on April 29. City, out of Europe and FA Cup opponents Southampton still to come, carry no such fixture congestion. For Burnley, relegation is now confirmed. Scott Parker's side return to the Championship after one season back in the top flight. They managed just five wins all season and conceded 68 goals, the worst record in the division. It ends a difficult campaign for the Clarets who were never able to establish themselves at this level.
THE TITLE PICTURE
Arsenal 70pts (33 played) β City 70pts (34 played). Arsenal's run-in: Newcastle (H), Fulham (A), Bournemouth (H), Palace (A). City's run-in: Southampton FA Cup semi-final (Wembley), Everton (A), Bournemouth (A), Aston Villa (H). It is City's title to lose.
