There are derbies, and then there are derbies that carry the weight of an entire season. Sunday night's clash at the Santiago Bernabéu falls firmly into the second category.

Real Madrid host Atlético Madrid in La Liga Matchday 29 (9pm) knowing that the title race is at a crossroads. They currently sit four points behind Barcelona. If they lose and Barcelona win earlier in the afternoon, that gap stretches to seven — potentially enough to cede the initiative in a title race Real Madrid cannot afford to hand away.

The context makes it all the more charged: earlier this season at the Metropolitano, Atlético ran riot against their neighbours, winning 5-2. It was a humiliation that still stings. Manager Álvaro Arbeloa — who replaced Xabi Alonso in January — has overseen an upturn in form, culminating in the two Champions League victories over Manchester City that secured a quarter-final berth. But Real have still not beaten Atlético at the Bernabéu in La Liga since December 2021. Sunday is the chance to end that run.

**The Mbappé factor:** After nearly five weeks out with a knee problem, Kylian Mbappé returned as a substitute against Manchester City on Tuesday and is now expected to start alongside Vinicius Júnior. He has scored 23 La Liga goals this season in just 23 appearances. His return is, simply, the biggest news in Spanish football this week.

**Bellingham cautiously optimistic:** Jude Bellingham has returned to training after his hamstring injury and may make the bench, though Arbeloa is unlikely to risk a start. After Bellingham rushed back prematurely from a shoulder injury earlier this season — and was part of the side that shipped five against Atlético — the club will be careful.

**Goalkeeping blow:** Thibaut Courtois suffered a thigh injury against Manchester City and is out for around six weeks. Andriy Lunin starts in goal. Eder Militão (hamstring), Rodrygo (knee, season uncertain) and Dani Ceballos (calf) are also out.

**Atlético's situation:** Diego Simeone's side are fourth, 57 points from 28 games — nine behind Real Madrid and 13 behind Barcelona. The title is not their concern, but Champions League qualification very much is. They are also in the Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad on April 18. Goalkeeper Jan Oblak is a major doubt (hip problem) with Juan Musso set to start. Pablo Barrios (thigh) and Rodrigo Mendoza (ankle) are both unavailable.

Atlético have not won at the Bernabéu in thirteen attempts. But four of the last six La Liga derbies have finished level — and Real Madrid have not beaten Atlético in Spain's top flight at home in over four years.
