Newcastle have taken apart the team they spent three years assembling. Sandro Tonali went to Tottenham for £92.5 million, Bruno Guimarães to Arsenal for £75 million, Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £69 million with add-ons. Add the smaller pieces and it is roughly £236 million out of the door, three of the best players at the club, inside a few months.


The reinvestment has been about £167 million, and its shape is the story.


The money went on youth


Aladji Bamba, a 20-year-old defensive midfielder, arrived from Monaco for about £35 million. Sean Steur, an 18-year-old playmaker, came from Ajax for £23 million. Bazoumana Touré, Lukáš Horníček and Amar Dedić followed. Almost everything Newcastle bought is under 24.


Matthias Jaissle gave three of them their debuts on the opening day against Liverpool, with Horníček in goal, and took a 2-2 draw from a match his side led twice and lost to a penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time.


That is a defensible plan and a brave one. It is also, on its own, a plan without a single player in it who has done the job at this level for a decade of Premier League Saturdays.


Nico González is the answer to that


The agreement reached last week, £47 million up front and £3 million in add-ons, brings in a 24-year-old who has played as a single pivot for Porto and Manchester City. He is not a prospect. He is the first arrival of the summer bought at roughly the level of the players who left.


City signed him from Porto in February 2025 for a reported €60 million as cover and succession for Rodri, then decided within eighteen months that he was surplus. Newcastle get the benefit of that impatience.


What is left to do


The window shuts at 11pm on Tuesday 1 September. Newcastle have the room and the money for more, and the question that decides whether this rebuild reads as bold or reckless is whether one more senior player arrives beside the teenagers.


On the evidence of the opening day, when they were nine minutes of stoppage time from beating Liverpool with three debutants in the side, the raw material is better than the sales suggest.
