France Football published the 30 men's nominees for the 2026 Ballon d'Or on Tuesday, alongside UEFA. The ceremony is on 26 October in London, the first time the award has left Paris since 2019.
Ousmane Dembélé defends the title. Lionel Messi is back on the list and chasing a ninth. Rodri returns after winning the Golden Ball at the World Cup with Spain. Paris Saint-Germain have ten of the thirty names, which tells you how last season was settled in Europe.
Barcelona have three. Pau Cubarsí, Lamine Yamal, and Rodri, who signed from Manchester City this summer for 60 million euros plus add-ons. Two of the three were at the club for the title. The other was playing against it.
Pedri won La Liga and the World Cup and is not on the list
Pedri played the season Barcelona were built around, then won the World Cup with Spain. He is not one of the thirty. In Spain that is the only line of the announcement anybody is discussing, and there is no reading of the year that explains it. Rodri came out of that same Spain side with the Golden Ball and a nomination. Pedri came out of it with neither.
Fermín López did the numbers and then broke his foot
Fermín finished the season with 13 goals and 17 assists, the sort of return that normally decides these lists for a midfielder. Then he fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot, needed surgery, and missed the World Cup entirely.
That is probably the whole explanation. The Ballon d'Or year now runs into a World Cup final, and a player who watched that from home does not get counted, however good the nine months before it were. It is still a hard way to be left out of thirty.
Raphinha and Dani Olmo are the other two
Goal called Raphinha's absence the biggest shock on the men's list. Dani Olmo is missing as well. Put those two next to Pedri and Fermín and the four Barcelona players most responsible for how the team actually played last season are all outside the thirty, while a centre back, a teenager and a summer signing are inside it.
Who else is not there
Cristiano Ronaldo is not nominated. Neither are Mohamed Salah, Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernández, Federico Valverde, Nico Williams, Désiré Doué, Bradley Barcola, Rayan Cherki, Warren Zaïre-Emery or Julián Álvarez, who started a World Cup final for Argentina.
The winner is announced in London on 26 October. The list will not change between now and then, which is exactly why the names left off it are worth saying out loud.
