Andriy Lunin will start in goal for Real Madrid in both legs of their Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich after Thibaut Courtois was ruled out for approximately six weeks.
The Belgian suffered a muscle injury to his right quadriceps during the round of 16 second leg against Manchester City, coming off at half-time with Madrid already 2-1 up. Real Madrid confirmed the diagnosis in an official statement and said his recovery will be monitored. He is expected to return before the end of the season and remains in contention for Belgium's World Cup squad.
Lunin is no stranger to big European nights. He was Madrid's hero in the 2023-24 Champions League run when Courtois was absent with an ACL injury. His record in knockout football is strong and Arbeloa will back him to deliver.
Bayern present a serious threat regardless. Harry Kane, Leroy Sane and Jamal Musiala have been in excellent form and the Bavarians eliminated Atalanta 10-2 on aggregate in the round of 16. The first leg at the Bernabeu on Tuesday April 7 is one of the ties of the round.
