Sporting CP 0-1 Arsenal β€” UCL Quarter-Final First Leg, Estadio Jose Alvalade

A match of fine margins ended with the finest of margins. Kai Havertz stabbed home in the first minute of stoppage time to give Arsenal a crucial 1-0 win at the Alvalade, sending Mikel Arteta's side back to the Emirates with an away goal and the tie firmly in their hands. Sporting CP, unbeaten at home in 17 consecutive matches, pushed hard but could not find the goal their attacking play deserved. The emotional centrepiece of the night β€” Viktor Gyokeres returning to the club where he scored 97 goals in 102 games β€” ended without a goal from the Swede, but the ovation the Alvalade gave him in the warm-up told its own story.

FORMATIONS AND LINEUPS

Sporting CP lined up in a 4-2-3-1. Rui Silva started in goal. The back four was Ivan Fresneda, Ousmane Diomande, Goncalo Inacio and Maxi Araujo. Hidemasa Morita and Joao Simoes screened in the double pivot. Geny Catamo, Trincao and Pote operated as the attacking three. Luis Suarez led the line. Notable absentees: captain Morten Hjulmand was suspended, and Nuno Santos, Fotis Ioannidis and Geovany Quenda were injured.

Arsenal lined up in a 4-2-3-1. David Raya started in goal. The back four was Ben White, William Saliba, Gabriel and Riccardo Calafiori. Martin Zubimendi and Declan Rice held the double pivot. Martin Odegaard, Leandro Trossard and Noni Madueke played behind the striker. Viktor Gyokeres led the line in his emotional return to Lisbon. Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze were both absent through injury β€” a significant blow to Arsenal's creative options.

FIRST HALF β€” BOTH SIDES THREATEN, NO BREAKTHROUGH

The opening stages were controlled by Sporting at home, as expected. In the 6th minute, a perfectly weighted through ball from Diomande caught Ben White out of position. Maxi Araujo ran in behind and shot from 15 metres β€” David Raya produced a vital save and the ball crashed against the crossbar. It was the kind of early moment that could have changed the entire tie.

Arsenal responded. In the 15th minute, Madueke's inswinging corner from the left caught everyone by surprise β€” his delivery crashed against the bar directly, denying him an Olimpico goal. Twice the woodwork had intervened. The game was being played at a furious pace.

Gyokeres received his standing ovation from the Alvalade faithful during the warm-up. Once the match began, the Sporting crowd turned against him as expected, but there was undeniable warmth beneath the noise. The Swede worked hard without getting into clear scoring positions in the first half. Arsenal's press, organised by Zubimendi and Rice, made it difficult for Sporting to play through the lines. Halftime arrived goalless.

SECOND HALF β€” DISALLOWED GOAL, GROWING TENSION

Arsenal grew into the second half. In the 63rd minute, Zubimendi unleashed a powerful strike from 20 metres that beat Rui Silva β€” but the goal was ruled out. Gyokeres had been in an offside position in the build-up to the pass, and the flag went up. It was a tight call, and Arteta was furious on the touchline.

Sporting sensed the game slipping away from them despite dominating at the Alvalade for most of the night. Trincao was dangerous with his dribbling, and Pote worked hard to create openings, but Arsenal's defensive shape β€” anchored by Saliba and Gabriel in central defence β€” was disciplined and difficult to break. Raya was rarely troubled in the second half as Arsenal sat back and absorbed Sporting's pressure.

The game looked destined for 0-0 β€” a result that would have given Arsenal an away draw at the Alvalade and slight psychological momentum β€” until the 90th minute plus one second of stoppage time.

THE WINNER

Havertz had come off the bench late in the second half. With the clock ticking into stoppage time, Arsenal worked a chance into the box and Havertz reacted fastest to stab the ball home. The Alvalade fell silent. Arsenal's bench erupted. 1-0 to the Gunners in Portugal β€” the away goal that could define the tie.

TACTICAL BREAKDOWN

Arteta set up Arsenal to contain and counter. Without Saka and Eze, Arsenal were naturally more cautious in transition, with Madueke taking on more of the wide creative burden and Trossard cutting in from the left. Zubimendi was excellent in the double pivot β€” disciplined, positionally smart, and reading danger before it arrived. Rice was the defensive anchor.

Sporting's best moments came when they bypassed the Arsenal press and found Araujo or Catamo running in behind. The absence of Hjulmand was noticeable β€” without their captain's drive from midfield, they lacked the engine to sustain pressure and turn dominance into clear-cut chances. Luis Suarez worked hard but was well marshalled by Saliba throughout.

Gyokeres worked selflessly as always but never quite got the service to threaten Rui Silva. The Alvalade crowd's emotional reaction to him underscored the narrative of the night, but football dictated the result.

WHAT IT MEANS

Arsenal take a 1-0 lead to the Emirates on April 14. They have won nine consecutive UCL away games at the Alvalade in their head-to-head history and remain unbeaten in the competition this season. A home tie against a fatigued Sporting side β€” who played 120 minutes against Bodo/Glimt just three weeks ago β€” now firmly favours the Gunners. Havertz, often questioned for his big-game impact, delivered the decisive moment when it mattered most.
