Bayern Munich 4-3 Real Madrid β UCL Quarter-Final Second Leg, Allianz Arena
Seven goals, a red card, a Neuer howler inside 35 seconds, and two late strikes to finish it. Bayern Munich eliminated Real Madrid in one of the greatest Champions League quarter-final ties in recent memory. Luis Diaz scored in the 89th minute and Michael Olise sealed it in stoppage time to send Bayern through 6-4 on aggregate and into a semi-final against PSG. Real Madrid had led 3-2 on the night at half-time and briefly put the tie level at 4-4 on aggregate, but Eduardo Camavinga's red card in the 86th minute broke them. This was Bayern's first victory over Real Madrid since 2012 and the night they ended the most storied dynasty in Champions League history.
FORMATIONS AND LINEUPS
Bayern Munich lined up in a 4-2-3-1. Manuel Neuer in goal. Back four of Josip Stanisic, Dayot Upamecano, Jonathan Tah and Konrad Laimer. Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlovic as the double pivot. Michael Olise, Serge Gnabry and Luis Diaz behind Harry Kane. Jamal Musiala was not in the starting eleven.
Real Madrid lined up in a 4-2-3-1. Andriy Lunin in goal. Back four of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Eder Militao, Antonio Rudiger and Ferland Mendy. Federico Valverde and Jude Bellingham as the double pivot. Brahim Diaz, Arda Guler and Vinicius Junior behind Kylian Mbappe. Aurelien Tchouameni was suspended after picking up a yellow card in the first leg.
FIRST HALF β SEVEN GOALS, CHAOS, REAL MADRID LEVEL THE TIE
The game was extraordinary from the first seconds. Neuer received the ball outside his box, played it straight to Arda Guler 40 yards from goal, and the Turkish midfielder lobbed it over the stranded keeper to put Real ahead inside 35 seconds. It was one of the most costly goalkeeping errors in Champions League history. Bayern were 3-2 down on aggregate and in crisis before the game had barely started.
Bayern responded immediately. Pavlovic rose to meet a Joshua Kimmich corner in the 6th minute and headed home to make it 1-1 on the night, 3-3 on aggregate. The tempo was furious.
Guler struck again in the 29th minute. Brahim Diaz won a free kick after drawing a foul, and Guler curled the set piece past Neuer β a brilliant effort that put Real back ahead 2-1 on the night and 4-3 in front on aggregate. Madrid were now one goal from the semi-finals.
But Kane levelled in the 38th minute. Upamecano picked out Kane inside the box and the England striker finished clinically to make it 2-2, restoring 4-4 on aggregate and sending the tie level again for the first time since the opening leg.
Mbappe then struck for Madrid two minutes before the break. Vinicius Junior's pace took him behind Upamecano, who could only deflect the cross, and Mbappe swept home the loose ball. 3-2 to Real on the night, 5-4 on aggregate. Real Madrid went into half-time three goals needed to go through.
SECOND HALF β CAMAVINGA RED, DIAZ AND OLISE WIN IT
Bayern dominated the second half from start to finish. With 68.6% of possession and 21 total attempts, Kompany's side relentlessly pressed and created but could not convert. Neuer produced saves to partly atone for his first-half error. Madrid sat deep and relied on their counterattacking threat.
The game turned in the 86th minute. Camavinga picked up his second yellow card β reckless in the context of a match this delicate β and Real were down to ten men with four minutes plus stoppage time remaining.
Diaz delivered. Three minutes later, in the 89th minute, he received the ball on the edge of the box after Camavinga's dismissal had left space in Madrid's midfield and drove a ferocious strike inside the far post. 3-3 on the night, 5-5 on aggregate. The Allianz Arena erupted.
Olise finished it in the 90th minute plus four. He found the ball on the opposite side of the area and whipped a left-footed shot off the inside of the post and in. 4-3 on the night. Bayern through 6-4 on aggregate.
WHAT IT MEANS
Bayern Munich reach the UCL semi-finals for the first time since 2023-24 and will face defending champions PSG. For Real Madrid, the exit confirms one of the most disappointing seasons in their recent history. No La Liga title β Barcelona nine points clear. No Copa del Rey β eliminated by second-division Albacete. No Champions League. Their season is over. Arbeloa's interim tenure ends in failure and the club faces a summer of significant rebuilding under a new permanent coach.
