Real Madrid 1-2 Bayern Munich β UCL Quarter-Final First Leg, Santiago Bernabeu
Bayern Munich came to the Bernabeu and did exactly what Vincent Kompany said they would β they played without fear. Luis Diaz broke the deadlock late in the first half, Harry Kane scored his first-ever goal at the Bernabeu seconds into the second, and despite Kylian Mbappe pulling one back, Bayern held on to take a precious one-goal advantage to Munich. The tie is alive, but Bayern are firmly in control.
FORMATIONS AND LINEUPS
Real Madrid lined up in a 4-4-2. Andriy Lunin started in goal. The back four was Trent Alexander-Arnold, Rudiger, Huijsen and Carreras. Tchouameni and Thiago Pitarch partnered in the double pivot, with Federico Valverde and Arda Guler operating in the wider midfield roles. Mbappe and Vinicius Junior led the attack. Jude Bellingham was not in the starting XI β he came off the bench late. Notably, Arbeloa started Huijsen at centre-back with Militao on the bench, suggesting he intended to preserve the returning Brazilian for game-management.
Bayern Munich lined up in a 4-2-3-1. Manuel Neuer started in goal. The back four was Josip Stanisic, Dayot Upamecano, Jonathan Tah and Konrad Laimer. Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlovic anchored the double pivot. Michael Olise, Serge Gnabry and Luis Diaz operated across the attacking three. Harry Kane led the line β fit enough to start despite the ankle concern, exactly as Kimmich predicted he would be.
FIRST HALF β BAYERN DOMINATE, DIAZ BREAKS THE DEADLOCK
Bayern controlled the opening 45 minutes completely. They held 59% possession, pressed Madrid high and denied them time on the ball. Gnabry had a one-on-one saved brilliantly by Lunin in the first half after Thiago Pitarch lost possession β the kind of moment that, had it gone in, would have killed the tie. Olise was outstanding down the right, repeatedly beating Carreras in one-on-one situations and whipping crosses into the box that Madrid struggled to deal with.
The goal came in the 41st minute. A slick team move ended with Kane playing Gnabry in behind, Gnabry's pass cutting the Madrid defence open for Luis Diaz to slot low and clinical past Lunin into the bottom corner. It was the kind of goal Bayern had been threatening to score for 40 minutes β quick, direct, and devastatingly executed.
Tchouameni received a yellow card for a foul on Olise just before half-time. He is now suspended for the second leg. That is a significant blow for Arbeloa.
SECOND HALF β KANE STUNS THE BERNABEU, MBAPPE RESPONDS
The second half began with a moment of ruthless Bayern efficiency. Within 60 seconds of the restart, Pavlovic intercepted a loose Madrid pass and fed Olise, who found Kane arriving into the box. The Englishman fired a composed finish from outside the area past Lunin. First-ever goal at the Bernabeu. 2-0. The stadium fell quiet.
Mbappe dragged Madrid back into the tie in the 74th minute. Trent Alexander-Arnold, one of Madrid's few bright sparks all night, drove forward and delivered a precise cross into the box. Mbappe, arriving late, timed his run perfectly and guided a tap-in off the crossbar and in. 2-1. The Bernabeu roared back to life and Madrid pushed for an equaliser.
Bellingham came off the bench to try to add creativity. Musiala and Alphonso Davies came on for Bayern in a double substitution that showed Kompany's intent to defend the lead and add pace on the break. Davies in particular was dangerous. Vinicius had a chance that Neuer saved superbly late on. Mbappe nearly made it 2-2 but hit the side netting from a tight angle. Bayern held firm.
TACTICAL BREAKDOWN
Kompany's game plan was executed to near-perfection. He identified Carreras as Madrid's vulnerable point β Olise exploited him repeatedly from the first whistle. The high press forced errors in Madrid's midfield, particularly from Pitarch, who was caught in possession for the Gnabry chance in the first half and the Pavlovic steal that led to Kane's goal.
Valverde, usually Madrid's engine, was unusually subdued. The Bernabeu crowd grew restless as Madrid struggled to establish any rhythm in the first half. Guler was peripheral. Vinicius, marked heavily by Laimer, barely got a touch in the opening 40 minutes. The tactical suppression of Vinicius β Laimer vs Vinicius in the right back-left wing duel β was a pre-match concern that proved entirely justified.
Mbappe was Madrid's only real threat. His goal showed his quality β the run, the timing, the finish off the bar. He also had the best chance of the match late on. His partnership with Vinicius remains inconsistent but individual moments of brilliance keep Madrid in ties.
Tchouameni's yellow card and automatic suspension for the second leg is damaging. He has been Madrid's best midfielder this season. Losing him for the Allianz Arena is a significant handicap.
WHAT IT MEANS
Bayern take a 2-1 lead to the Allianz Arena on April 14. They will be at home, in front of 75,000 fans, with the momentum of a historic first Bernabeu win under Kompany. Madrid are not out β a 1-0 home win takes them through on away goals β but they face the second leg without Tchouameni and potentially without other suspended players. Valverde and Vinicius must both be far better in Munich.
For Arbeloa, this is a second consecutive defeat after Mallorca. The pressure is building. The UCL is his last chance at a trophy this season.
