Manchester City 2-1 Arsenal: Haaland Strikes as City Cut Title Gap to Three Points

Manchester City beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Etihad. Rayan Cherki scored a stunning solo goal before Donnarumma's howler gifted Havertz an equaliser inside the first 20 minutes. Haaland's 65th-minute strike won it. The title gap is now three points with City having a game in hand at Burnley on Wednesday.

Manchester City 2-1 Arsenal β€” Premier League Matchday 33, Etihad Stadium

Manchester City did what they needed to do. A breathless, chaotic first half ended 1-1 through a spectacular Cherki goal and an extraordinary Donnarumma howler. Then Haaland broke Arsenal in the 65th minute and City held on. The gap at the top is three points. City have a game in hand at Burnley on Wednesday. Arsenal's title is no longer in their own hands.

FORMATIONS AND LINEUPS

Manchester City lined up in a 4-3-3. Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal. Back four of Matheus Nunes, Abdukodir Khusanov, Marc Guehi and Nico O'Reilly. Rodri and Bernardo Silva as the double pivot. Antoine Semenyo, Rayan Cherki and Jeremy Doku behind Erling Haaland. Ruben Dias remained out. Gvardiol and Stones also unavailable.

Arsenal lined up in a 4-3-3. David Raya in goal. Back four of Cristhian Mosquera, William Saliba, Gabriel and Piero Hincapie. Martin Zubimendi and Declan Rice as the double pivot with Martin Odegaard as the advanced midfielder. Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze out wide behind Kai Havertz. Both Odegaard and Madueke started despite recent injury concerns. Bukayo Saka, Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino all absent.

FIRST HALF β€” CHERKI BRILLIANCE, DONNARUMMA DISASTER, 1-1 AT THE BREAK

This was the most dramatic opening 20 minutes of the Premier League season. City took the lead in the 16th minute through Rayan Cherki β€” a moment of pure individual brilliance. Semenyo found him on the edge of the box and the French midfielder danced past three challenges, shifting from his left foot onto his right, and slotted the ball off the far post and in. It was the kind of goal that changes atmospheres and the Etihad was rocking.

But just 107 seconds later it was 1-1 in the most bizarre fashion. Donnarumma received a throw-in from Nunes and took too long in possession. Kai Havertz closed him down, the clearance struck Havertz's foot and looped over the keeper into the far corner. Donnarumma stood open-mouthed. Guardiola looked stunned on the touchline. Arsenal could not believe what had happened. A gift equaliser, and it was completely underserved.

City continued to dominate possession and create chances but could not break the deadlock before half-time. Haaland had a shot hit the outside of the post from close range. Semenyo's drilled effort was blocked bravely by Hincapie. Arsenal sat narrow, defended their lines and looked to counter, with Madueke causing early problems on the right before his knee flared up again.

SECOND HALF β€” HAALAND SETTLES IT, ARSENAL LATE FLURRY COMES TO NOTHING

Arteta made a change at half-time, sending on Martinelli for Madueke. Eze moved to the right. City took control of the second half almost immediately. They had 62% possession in the opening 20 minutes of the second period and relentlessly worked the ball into dangerous areas.

The goal came in the 65th minute. Doku drove at the Arsenal defence down the left and played the ball inside to O'Reilly. O'Reilly's first-time pass slipped through to Haaland who finished with his usual clinical certainty. 2-1 to City. The Etihad erupted.

Arsenal pushed hard for a response. Gabriel rose to meet a corner with a powerful header that struck the post with Donnarumma beaten β€” the goalkeeper who had gifted them one was now being saved by the woodwork at the other end. Havertz, who had been dangerous throughout, headed a glorious late chance over from close range when it felt easier to score. City held firm. Arsenal's late pressure came to nothing.

WHAT IT MEANS

The title race has been completely reset. Arsenal remain top on 70 points but City are now just three points behind on 67 β€” and they have a game in hand. If City beat Burnley on Wednesday they will be level on points and ahead on goal difference, with both sides having played the same number of games. Arsenal have five games remaining including Newcastle at home and a season finale at Crystal Palace. City face Burnley, an FA Cup semi-final weekend without a league fixture, then Everton, Brentford, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace. This title is going to the final day. For Arsenal, the spectre of 2023 looms large again β€” when they arrived at the Etihad as leaders and left four points behind after a 4-1 defeat. This time the margin of defeat was tighter and the response required is urgent. City, fully rested from their early Champions League exit, have hit the form of champions at exactly the right moment.
