MATCH OVERVIEW
Aston Villa produced a dominant display at Villa Park on Friday evening, defeating Liverpool 4-2 to seal a Champions League return with two Premier League matchdays remaining. Ollie Watkins was the star of the show, scoring twice and contributing an assist in a result that damages Liverpool's own top-four ambitions.
FIRST HALF
Villa took control before the break when Morgan Rogers fired home in the 42nd minute to give Unai Emery's side a deserved lead. Liverpool, with 55 percent of possession, struggled to create clear-cut chances and were made to pay for their lack of penetration in the final third.
SECOND HALF
Virgil van Dijk levelled matters briefly just after the restart with a powerful header, but Villa's response was immediate and clinical. Watkins restored the lead in the 57th minute before adding his second from close range in the 73rd, essentially ending the contest. Van Dijk grabbed a consolation late on but John McGinn sealed the result with a cool left-foot finish in the 89th minute to make it 4-2.
TACTICAL NOTES
Villa set up in a compact mid-block and used the pace of Watkins and Rogers to devastating effect on the counter. Liverpool's midfield failed to impose itself and the back line looked vulnerable to runs in behind throughout. For Villa, this result confirms a place among Europe's elite for another season. For Liverpool, the defeat raises serious questions about consistency in the run-in.
