If the rest of the world needed a reminder of how deep France's attacking options run, Michael Olise provided it emphatically. The Bayern Munich winger scored a first career hat-trick as France beat Northern Ireland 3-1 in Lille on Monday, completing an attacking performance that had Didier Deschamps reaching for superlatives at full time.
Olise struck twice either side of half-time, drilling home a rebound on both occasions, before sealing the treble in the 75th minute with a curling shot from outside the area into the far corner. The France attack for the evening also featured Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue — a lineup close to what Deschamps is expected to name for the World Cup opener against Senegal on June 16 in New Jersey. William Saliba returned to the back line, further easing concerns about France's defensive availability.
Mbappe had a quiet night in front of goal but celebrated his 98th cap for France. When asked if supporters should worry about his sharpness, Deschamps smiled and relayed his captain's response: "He told me that he kept it for the United States. That's fine with me."
