Liverpool have agreed a surprise season-long loan deal for Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araújo, confirmed by Fabrizio Romano and reported across Sky Sports, Liverpool.com and beIN Sports. Barcelona sporting director Deco has approved the move, which includes a non-mandatory buy option Liverpool can choose to trigger at the end of the 2026-27 season depending on Araújo's performance.
The move addresses a real need at Anfield: Liverpool lost Ibrahima Konaté to Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer, and his intended replacement, 21-year-old Jérémy Jacquet from Rennes, has struggled with injuries throughout pre-season, leaving captain Virgil van Dijk as the only fit senior centre-back. Manager Andoni Iraola pushed for another option before the window closes. Araújo's ability to also cover right-back adds further value given Liverpool's lack of depth there.
For Barcelona, the move reflects Araújo's fall down the pecking order: he's dropped behind Pau Cubarsí and Gerard Martín at centre-back and Jules Koundé at right-back, despite being one of the club's four captains. He leaves having made 213 appearances and scored 14 goals for Barcelona since joining from Boston River in 2018.
