Marcus Rashford is staying at Manchester United. Barcelona held a €30 million option to make last season's loan permanent, chose not to trigger it, and the clause expired with their sporting department preferring to spend the budget elsewhere under their salary-cap constraints.
United are not offering a way out either. They have no plans to negotiate a fresh loan with Barcelona, which removes the obvious escape route with five days of the window left, and the plan now is to reintegrate him into the squad rather than move him on.
That is the part worth sitting with. Rashford has not played a Premier League match for United since December 2024. Two loan spells followed, at Aston Villa and then Barcelona, and he returns to a club that has changed managers and rebuilt around him being somewhere else. Michael Carrick inherits a forward with a big salary, a big name, and no minutes in the competition his club plays in.
Rashford wanted the Barcelona move and Barcelona have not entirely lost interest, but interest without a fee is not a transfer. Unless something appears before 11pm on Tuesday, this is settled, and the interesting question stops being where he goes and becomes whether he plays.
