Nicolas Jackson has joined Aston Villa from Chelsea in a deal worth up to £65 million, around €75 million with add-ons, on a five-year contract. Chelsea would only sell permanently, and Villa needed a centre-forward badly enough to agree.
Unai Emery is the reason it is Jackson rather than anyone else. He coached him at Villarreal, pushed for him from the moment Al-Hilal opened talks for Ollie Watkins, and has effectively swapped a 30-year-old for a 25-year-old while banking the difference on the two fees.
Villa also had to win a race they nearly lost. Jackson had agreed personal terms with more than one club, and Atlético Madrid were holding him as their answer if Julián Álvarez left. The full structure of Villa's deal has not been broken out publicly beyond the ceiling.
What they are getting is the player Bayern Munich borrowed for a season without buying: quick, direct, a handful for defenders, and not yet reliable in front of goal. At £65 million the price reflects the first half of that description and bets on the second.
For Chelsea it is another sale funding the biggest spend in world football this summer, eleven first-team signings for a combined €408 million, from a club that paid €35 million for Jackson in 2023.
