Newcastle have found their Bruno Guimarães replacement three weeks after cashing him in. The clubs have a verbal agreement worth £47 million up front and £3 million in add-ons, Nico González has given the move his green light with personal terms settled, and he is expected to travel for a medical imminently.
Manchester City signed him from Porto in February 2025 for a reported €60 million, as cover and eventual succession for Rodri. Eighteen months later they are selling at a number that does not get that back in euro terms.
This is City's third departure to a Premier League rival inside a week. Savinho and Omar Marmoush are both bound for Tottenham, and on fixed fees alone the three deals raise around £172 million, rising towards £185 million if every add-on and obligation lands. Enzo Maresca opened his reign with a 3-0 Community Shield defeat and needed a substitute to rescue his first league match, and the answer so far has been to sell rather than to add.
Newcastle's arithmetic runs the other way. They have banked £92.5 million for Sandro Tonali, £70 million for Anthony Gordon and £75 million for Bruno Guimarães across this window and the last, and the midfield they were built around has been dismantled piece by piece. Nico González is 24, plays as a single pivot or a deeper eight, and is the first of those replacements to arrive at a comparable level rather than a cheaper one.
