Cristian Romero is going to Atlético Madrid. Fabrizio Romano reports the deal is done, with Tottenham and Atlético settling on a total package of €40 million for the Argentina centre-back. Romero signs through 2030 with an option to extend to 2031, on a reported salary of around €6 million a year. The clubs' formal announcements are the last step.
The signing is Diego Simeone's. Atlético's coach pushed for his compatriot throughout the window, and the club cleared the financial room to do it by selling Nahuel Molina to Roma and Matteo Ruggeri to Aston Villa. The eventual package matched the structure Inter Milan had already put in place with Spurs. Inter had a €40 million framework agreed but never closed the player side, and once Romero made it clear he wanted Spain, Atlético were in front. Arsenal enquired and were categorically rejected; Tottenham would not sell to a Premier League rival. Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi had signalled weeks ago that he would not stand in his captain's way: "I want to respect the will of the players," he said.
Barcelona were briefly part of the story. TEAMtalk reported that Barcelona and Arsenal had both spoken to Romero's entourage to try to turn his head, and the need was genuine: Ronald Araújo has gone to Liverpool on a season-long loan and Andreas Christensen's fitness remains unreliable, leaving Pau Cubarsí without a settled partner. It never progressed to a formal bid, and Barcelona's centre-back problem goes into the closing weeks of the window unsolved.
Romero leaves as Tottenham's captain, and leaves early into a contract he signed only last summer that ran to 2029. He arrived from Atalanta in 2021 and won the Europa League with the club, but had made no secret of wanting to move on this summer. At the Metropolitano he joins a defence built to Simeone's specification, and becomes the latest Argentine to be handed a central role there.
