Cristian Romero is an Atletico Madrid player. The deal was confirmed on 15 August, an initial €35 million with up to €5 million in add-ons and a five-year contract, and it ended five seasons at Tottenham.
Inter Milan spent most of the window believing they had him. They had a verbal agreement with Tottenham at around €40 million and personal terms broadly settled, and then needed to resolve Benjamin Pavard's future before they could commit. Atletico did not have that problem, and Romero flew to Madrid for a medical while Inter were still tidying up.
Diego Simeone has wanted him for years, which is the least surprising part of this. A defender who plays on the edge of a booking and treats every cross as a personal insult was always going to end up at Atletico eventually.
Tottenham lose a captain and 156 appearances, in a summer where Roberto De Zerbi accepted the exit rather than resisted it. Their last season together ended with the relationship between Romero and the club's hierarchy visibly frayed, and €40 million at 28 for a player who wanted out is a reasonable place to end it.
Atletico get a centre back who has won a World Cup and a Copa America, in a window where they are also trying to hold on to Julian Alvarez.
