Two wingers. Two European giants. One transfer that is finished, and one that Real Madrid are still fighting to close, and may end up paying nearly double for. Here is the numbers, and here is who has actually won the business so far.
THE DEAL THAT IS ALREADY DONE
Barcelona's answer arrived in May. Anthony Gordon signed a five-year contract worth a reported €80 million (€70m plus €10m in add-ons), and by the time most of Europe's transfer windows had even opened, the business was finished. No auction, no summer-long saga, no rival hijack. Newcastle sold, Barça presented him at their commercial offices, and Gordon used part of his unveiling press conference to speak fluent Spanish, saying he had been learning the language since he was three years old because playing for Barça was always the plan.
THE DEAL REAL MADRID ARE STILL FIGHTING FOR
Yan Diomande is a different story entirely. RB Leipzig want up to €130 million for their 19-year-old winger. Real Madrid's opening bid, reported at around €100 million, was rejected as too low. PSG are said to have reached personal terms with the player already. Liverpool and Arsenal are both still credited as admirers from earlier in the saga. As of writing, nobody has actually signed him, and whoever does is going to pay considerably more than Barcelona paid for Gordon just to get a fee Leipzig will accept.
THE LEAGUE NUMBERS
Gordon's final season at Newcastle: 7 goals, 2 assists in 26 Premier League appearances, 1,814 minutes played. Solid, proven Premier League and England international output from a 25-year-old at the peak of his usable prime.
Diomande's season at Leipzig: 12 goals, 7 assists in 31 Bundesliga appearances. That makes him, at 19 years and 114 days old, the fourth-youngest player ever to reach double figures for goals in a single Bundesliga campaign.
Goal for goal, Diomande's domestic output rate is actually superior: more goals, comparable assists, in a tougher developmental window, at an age where most wingers are still playing academy football. That is exactly why three of Europe's biggest clubs are circling, and exactly why Leipzig can afford to hold out for €130 million.
THE BIGGER STAGE: CHAMPIONS LEAGUE AND THE WORLD CUP
This is where the gap actually opens up. Gordon's 2025-26 Champions League campaign was not just good. It was historic. Ten goals and 2 assists in 12 matches, including a four-goal night away at Qararbag, the best Champions League season any Englishman has ever produced for an English club, breaking the all-time record for goals by an English player in a single campaign. That happened in Europe's actual top competition, against the continent's best defences, in the same season Barcelona decided to sign him.
Diomande has no Champions League minutes to compare it to. Leipzig's brilliant Bundesliga season, built largely on his form, secured their return to the Champions League for 2026-27, meaning this year's 12 goals and 7 assists came entirely in domestic football, not against European opposition.
At the World Cup, the gap is smaller but still there. Gordon started 5 of England's 6 matches, scoring once, the goal that put England ahead in the semi-final against Argentina, and set up 3 more, including two assists for Harry Kane in the Round of 32 win over DR Congo. Diomande started all 4 of Ivory Coast's matches and was heavily involved in build-up play, but managed only 1 assist and 0 goals before Ivory Coast went out to Norway in the Round of 32. He did become the youngest player in Ivory Coast's history to be directly involved in a World Cup goal, at 19 years and 223 days old, a marker of what is still to come rather than what has already arrived.
SO WHO HAS MADE THE BETTER BUSINESS
This is where it gets interesting. Diomande has the better statistical domestic season, the higher ceiling, and, if his trajectory continues, the bigger long-term asset. If Real Madrid land him for anything close to €130 million, they are paying a serious premium for potential that has, so far, only really shown up in the Bundesliga.
Barcelona already have a proven Premier League and international-level winger who has scored a Champions League record and a World Cup semi-final goal in the same twelve months, at a lower fee, with zero transfer uncertainty, and he is already unveiled and training with the squad. Gordon is not the more exciting statistical story in his domestic league. On the two stages that actually decide these arguments, Europe and the World Cup, he already has the bigger season.
Until Real Madrid actually close a deal, at whatever fee Leipzig eventually accept, Barcelona's business stands as the smarter one on the only measure that is actually final: what is signed and delivered, on the biggest stages, versus what is still just a rejected bid and a want-away price tag.
