Gavi put his hand on his right knee in the closing minutes of the first half at the Martínez Valero, looked to the bench and signalled that he was done. Pedri came on. Barcelona went on to win 5-0, and nobody at the club spent Sunday night thinking about the scoreline.
Hansi Flick could not offer much afterwards beyond the part everyone had already seen. It was the knee. That was the worry, because of which knee it is and what has happened to it before.
The tests came back on Monday
Barcelona's medical statement was as short as these things get, and for once that was good news. "Gavi received a blow to his right knee during yesterday's match. The medical tests carried out this morning have confirmed that it is only a contusion."
A contusion is a bruise. He is expected back in group training within a short time, with no procedure, no timeline measured in months and no rehabilitation programme to announce.
Why the reaction was what it was
Because the last three years have taught everyone at the club to expect the other answer. Gavi was out from November 2023 until September 2024 with the first serious injury to that knee, then out again from August 2025 until March 2026 with another problem in the same place. He has spent more of his early twenties recovering than playing.
That is the context for a squad and a support that watched him signal to the bench and assumed the worst. It is also the context for his own message afterwards, which read like someone apologising for a fright rather than an injury: "Sorry for making you suffer so much."
What it means for the week
Flick started the league season with Marc Bernal and Gavi in a double pivot, in a team missing Balde entirely, with João Cancelo not fit to start and Jules Koundé held back until the 80th minute. Losing Gavi for any length of time would have narrowed an already thin middle.
Instead he is a bruise away from available, and Barcelona's rearranged opening fixture against Athletic Club comes at home on Thursday. Pedri, who replaced him, will keep his place either way.
