The post-election euphoria at FC Barcelona is set to be followed by a major announcement as Joan Laporta has revealed that Hansi Flick's contract extension until June 2028 is practically finalised.

Speaking to RAC1 in the early hours after his landslide re-election victory on Sunday — in which he secured 68% of the vote — Laporta said: "We want to renew his contract until 2028, giving him a year's grace period each year. He's in favour, and we'll announce the agreement shortly because he's very happy here."

According to Diario Sport, the agreement between Flick and sporting director Deco was already in place before the election, with the German coach choosing to wait for Laporta's re-election before making anything official. The two parties reached the agreement during a meeting in February involving Laporta, Flick, and his agent Pini Zahavi.

Flick, who turns 61 this month, has always preferred to extend his contract one season at a time rather than committing to a long-term deal. His current contract runs until June 2027 — itself an extension from his original deal through 2026 — and the new agreement will add a further twelve months.

The German coach has transformed Barcelona since his arrival in the summer of 2024. In his first season he delivered a domestic treble, including a Copa del Rey and Supercopa de España triumph over Real Madrid. This season, Barcelona lead La Liga by four points and are in the Champions League quarter-final hunt, heading into Wednesday's second leg against Newcastle at Camp Nou.

Laporta was effusive in his praise for Flick, saying: "It would demonstrate stability and that we're winning. I think it's possible he'll stay with Barça for another five years." Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Tuesday morning that the renewal is set to be signed and announced imminently.
