1. RODRI DOUBT FOR BURNLEY — CITY GO TONIGHT WITHOUT THEIR ENGINE

Manchester City travel to Turf Moor tonight for the game that could send them top of the Premier League — but they may have to do it without Rodri. The Spanish midfielder limped off in the 88th minute of Sunday's win over Arsenal with a groin injury, and Guardiola confirmed on Monday he is expected to miss the Burnley game. "I think he will not be ready for tomorrow," Guardiola said. "We will see for the next games — maybe the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton on Saturday, maybe in 12 days against Everton." Nico Gonzalez came on as his replacement at the Etihad and is the likely cover at Turf Moor. City win tonight and they go top of the Premier League on goal difference with five games remaining. Burnley are 19th, virtually relegated. Kick-off 7pm UK.

2. SAKA COULD RETURN FOR NEWCASTLE OR ATLETICO — ARSENAL INJURY UPDATE

There is positive news from Arsenal's treatment room. Reports this morning suggest the club are hopeful Bukayo Saka will return within the next week, with Newcastle at home on Saturday and the UCL semi-final first leg at Atletico Madrid on April 28 as the targets. Saka has not played since the Carabao Cup final on March 22 — an Achilles problem now entering its second month. He is reportedly back in training and could feature from the bench against Newcastle. Martin Odegaard has also expressed optimism he can stay fit until the end of the season after his difficult run of injuries. Timber and Calafiori both remain doubtful. Merino remains out for the season. Arsenal face their most important fortnight of the season with two enormous fixtures in six days — both of which they need Saka for.

3. BOURNEMOUTH APPOINT MARCO ROSE TO REPLACE IRAOLA

Bournemouth confirmed yesterday that Marco Rose will take over from Andoni Iraola at the end of the season on a three-year contract. Iraola announced last week that he would not be renewing his contract when it expires in the summer, ending a three-year reign that transformed the Cherries into a genuine top-half Premier League force. Rose, 49, was the club's top target from the moment Iraola's departure was confirmed. He has been out of management since leaving RB Leipzig in March 2025 and previously managed Borussia Monchengladbach, Borussia Dortmund and Red Bull Salzburg. The appointment carries symmetry — Iraola cited Rose's Gladbach side as one of his favourite teams to watch back in his Rayo Vallecano days, admiring his high-intensity pressing style. Bournemouth's statement read: "The club's immediate focus remains firmly on finishing the current campaign as strongly as possible." They are 13th in the table and in contention for a Europa Conference League spot.

4. CITY BURNLEY — WHAT IT MEANS FOR THE TITLE RACE

Tonight's game at Turf Moor is the most consequential midweek fixture of the Premier League season. Arsenal are on 70 points. City are on 67 with tonight's game in hand. A City win makes it 70-70 — level on points with City ahead on goal difference. From there, both teams have four games remaining, with City's run-in including trips to Everton and Bournemouth, while Arsenal host Newcastle on Saturday before their UCL double-header. Both clubs' final game is on May 18 — City at home to Aston Villa, Arsenal at Crystal Palace. The title may go to the final day. Arsenal will be watching Turf Moor tonight from afar hoping for a Burnley miracle, though the Clarets have lost all five competitive meetings with City under Guardiola by a combined score of 19-2.

5. THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL — THE BIGGEST WEEK OF THE SEASON

The next seven days may define the English football season. Tonight: Burnley vs Man City — City can go top. Saturday: Arsenal vs Newcastle and Man City vs Southampton in the FA Cup semi-final. Wednesday April 28: Arsenal vs Atletico Madrid UCL semi-final first leg at the Metropolitano. Also Wednesday April 28: PSG vs Bayern Munich UCL semi-final first leg in Paris. Arsenal must manage a Premier League title push and a Champions League semi-final simultaneously — exactly the kind of two-front challenge that has undone them in previous seasons. City, out of Europe and fresh, have the luxury of full focus on the league. The next seven days will tell us whether Arsenal have the squad depth and the mental resilience to handle both.
