The night that felt like a statement — Liverpool's 4-0 demolition of Galatasaray, Salah's 50th Champions League goal, the quarter-final booking — ended with the most unwelcome subplot of the season.
Mohamed Salah left the pitch with 16 minutes remaining on Wednesday night and headed straight down the tunnel. He had already scored and assisted. The crowd did not yet know what Arne Slot confirmed on Friday morning: the Egyptian is out for Saturday's trip to Brighton, and will miss the upcoming international break with Egypt entirely.
"Unusual and as a result of that you can expect the outcome — he is not available for tomorrow," Slot told reporters. "The good thing for Liverpool is we go to international break. The bad news for Egypt is he can't go there."
The injury is muscular, the exact nature unconfirmed. Salah has been in encouraging form since the turn of the year — five goals and five assists in 14 games in 2026 — after a slow start to the season. His absence from the Amex is significant. Without him, Liverpool's attacking options include Florian Wirtz, who has found the physical demands of the Premier League challenging since his £116m summer arrival, Cody Gakpo, and teenager Rio Ngumoha.
The context matters. Liverpool sit fifth in the Premier League — outside the Champions League qualification spots — and are fighting hard to break back into the top four. Slot has had some consistency issues domestically, with defeats at Wolves and a draw against Tottenham interrupting their form. Brighton at the Amex, who have won three of their last four home matches, is not a straightforward fixture even with a full squad.
Slot did offer some optimism. "History has shown he can be back earlier than some others," the Dutch manager said. "There are only two weeks until we go again, so let's hope in that period of time he can be back." The priority — Liverpool's Champions League quarter-final against PSG in April — remains clearly in mind.
