Rodri has just dropped one of the quotes of the international break. Speaking to Radioestadio Noche on Onda Cero on Wednesday while on Spain duty, the Manchester City and Ballon d'Or-winning midfielder did not close the door on a future move to Real Madrid.
"Even though I played for Atlético Madrid, Madrid is not a closed door for me," he said. "You can't turn down the best clubs in the world."
The timing is significant. Rodri's contract at Manchester City runs until June 2027, and formal extension talks have stalled. He acknowledged that a decision is coming: "I have one year left on my contract. There will come a point when we'll have to sit down and talk."
Real Madrid have been linked with the 29-year-old for months as they search for a long-term midfield anchor following the retirements of Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić. Rodri, a Madrid native, fits the profile perfectly. The main obstacle has always been his four years at Atlético — a club Real Madrid fans do not forgive easily. Rodri has now made clear that is not his problem.
In the same interview, he addressed his relationship with Vinicius Junior — insisting he holds "deep admiration" for the Brazilian despite their rivalry during the 2024 Ballon d'Or ceremony, which Rodri won. He also hinted at a potential double-pivot partnership with Arsenal's Martín Zubimendi at the World Cup, noting Spain previously won the tournament with two defensive midfielders.
Man City are understood to still want him to renew. But Rodri just made that conversation much more complicated.
