Real Madrid confirmed on Thursday that Eder Militao has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in the biceps femoris of his left leg, ruling him out for the remainder of the club season. The Brazilian centre-back went off at half-time during Tuesday's 2-1 win over Alaves after feeling a sharp pain in his left thigh while attempting a shot on goal.

The club's official statement read: "Following tests carried out today on our player Eder Militao by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in the biceps femoris of his left leg. His recovery will be monitored."

WORLD CUP DOUBT

Earlier reports suggested Militao would be fit for the World Cup. That picture has since changed. Brazil's medical staff are now cautious about his availability for the tournament, per reports from Adom Online and Morocco World News, given his extensive history of serious muscle and knee injuries. The 28-year-old is targeting a return in time for Brazil's opener against Morocco in New York on June 13 — but nothing is guaranteed at this stage. Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti, who manages Militao at club level, values him highly but will need to assess his fitness before naming his final squad. Militao has already suffered two ACL tears — left knee in August 2023, right knee in 2024 — and has managed only 21 appearances this season, playing 90 minutes just once since December. A third significant hamstring injury in a matter of months raises serious questions about his durability.

GULER ALSO OUT FOR SEASON

On the same day, Real Madrid confirmed a separate injury to Arda Guler — a biceps femoris tear in his right leg picked up in training ahead of the Betis game. The Turkish midfielder, one of Madrid's standout performers this season, is also out for the remainder of the campaign. Marca report Guler is expected to be fit for Turkey's World Cup campaign.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Madrid have now had more than nine players suffer significant injuries this season — Carvajal, Courtois, Rodrygo (ACL, World Cup ruled out), Alaba, Mendy, Bellingham, Huijsen, Camavinga, Guler and Militao. With six La Liga games left and nothing to play for, the season ends in misery on and off the pitch.
