Kobbie Mainoo has committed his future to Manchester United, agreeing terms on a new contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2031. Fabrizio Romano confirmed the deal on Tuesday with his customary "here we go", posting: "Kobbie Mainoo and Manchester United together for the next five years — here we go. The agreement is done and is set to be signed in the upcoming days." The Press Association also confirmed the agreement on Wednesday morning.
The deal is a remarkable turnaround for a player who looked set to leave just months ago. Under former manager Ruben Amorim, Mainoo had fallen entirely out of favour — he made an August request to leave on loan which was rejected, and a January exit was being seriously considered by both parties. The arrival of Michael Carrick as interim head coach changed everything. Carrick, a legendary central midfielder himself during his own United career, immediately identified Mainoo as the foundation of his system. Since Carrick took over, Mainoo has started every game and become the first name on the teamsheet.
The financial terms reflect his new status. Mainoo's salary rises from £25,000 per week to a base figure of £120,000 per week, with performance-related bonuses on top — a fourfold increase that underlines United's intent to build their midfield future around him.
Mainoo spoke to Sky Sports after Monday's 2-1 win over Brentford: "I've loved every minute of it, especially under the boss now. Just feeling the confidence." Carrick praised him in the same post-match interview, highlighting his ability in "build-up play, his taking of the ball, his creation and starting the attacks."
The 21-year-old has made 98 appearances for United and scored seven goals — the most famous being in the 2024 FA Cup final win over Manchester City. With Casemiro leaving this summer, Mainoo will be handed even more responsibility next season. United are also in discussions over a new deal for captain Bruno Fernandes. The club sit third in the Premier League, two points from securing Champions League football for next season.
