Ghana have ended their coaching search. The Ghana Football Association confirmed on Monday April 13 that Carlos Queiroz has been appointed head coach of the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The official GFA statement read: "The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association, working with all key stakeholders, has appointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars. The former Real Madrid, Manchester United, Portugal, and Iran coach will lead Ghana's campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States."
Queiroz brings extensive international experience to the role. He led Portugal to the 2010 World Cup knockout phase, took charge of Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 tournaments, guided South Africa to the 2002 World Cup, and led Egypt to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations final. He has also worked in Japan, Oman and Qatar.
Sports Minister Kofi Adams had confirmed the appointment was imminent, saying last week: "Hopefully, if by this weekend we don't announce the coach, latest by Monday we should be able to announce our new coach."
The appointment comes less than 70 days before Ghana's World Cup opener. Ghana are placed in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. Their first match is against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, Canada, before facing England and then Croatia.
Queiroz replaces Otto Addo, who was relieved of his duties on March 31 following a 2-1 defeat to Germany in a friendly. Addo had originally guided Ghana to World Cup qualification with a 1-0 win over Comoros in October 2025. The GFA confirmed Queiroz begins work immediately.
