Real Madrid got the job done against Manchester City. Five-one on aggregate, Champions League quarter-finals secured, Vinicius magnificent. But the headline from the Etihad that matters most right now has nothing to do with the result.
Thibaut Courtois went down the tunnel at half-time and did not come back.
What Happened
Courtois was, by all accounts, excellent in the first 45 minutes. He kept Erling Haaland and Rodri quiet, commanded his area, and looked every inch the world's best goalkeeper. Then, during the half-time interval, Real Madrid's medical staff made the call. Reports from Spain indicate the Belgian picked up a right adductor problem — possibly aggravated during the warm-up — and manager Álvaro Arbeloa confirmed post-match that the substitution was precautionary, though Courtois "wanted to continue."
Andriy Lunin stepped in and was excellent, making key saves in the second half to protect the aggregate lead. But Lunin's performance, however composed, cannot mask the anxiety in Madrid right now.
The Stakes
Courtois is set to undergo an MRI scan on Thursday in Madrid. The results will determine everything. Reports from AS and Diario Sport suggest a possible muscle tear in the right adductor — a significantly more serious diagnosis than the initial "overload" framing. A minor strain means 7-10 days, and Courtois could be back in time for the Champions League quarter-final first leg on April 7 against Bayern Munich. A grade-two tear or worse, and he may miss far more.
Sunday's Madrid derby against Atlético at the Bernabéu is almost certainly beyond him regardless of the scan outcome.
The Lunin Question
The silver lining — and it is a genuine one — is that Lunin is not just a capable deputy. He is a full international with 66 appearances for Real Madrid, a goalkeeper who has stepped in before on big nights and delivered. His performance against City was a reminder that Madrid are not without resource between the posts.
But there is a reason Courtois is the starter. His shot-stopping, his command, his ability to make the extraordinary look routine — these are qualities that Lunin, for all his quality, does not replicate.
