Thirty six clubs walked out of the Grimaldi Forum on Thursday evening knowing who they play: eight opponents each, four at home and four away, two drawn from each of the four pots. The fixture list with dates and kickoff times follows on Saturday.
Here is the draw as cards, club by club.
Arsenal
The harshest set of any English club. Real Madrid and Dortmund at home, Bayern Munich and Napoli away. José Mourinho returns to London, where he managed for eleven seasons at Chelsea and Tottenham, with a Madrid side yet to drop a point under him.
Barcelona
The only club in the draw handed two of the top bracket: Manchester City at home, Paris Saint-Germain away. Rodri, who left City for Barcelona this window in a package worth about €76.5 million and debuted off the bench on Thursday, gets his old club at the Camp Nou. Como at home brings Cesc Fàbregas back as an opponent.
Real Madrid
The kindest draw of the heavyweights. One tie against another top-bracket side, Arsenal away, plus Inter at home. After that it is PSV, Leipzig and LASK at the Bernabéu and Roma, Shakhtar Donetsk and AEK Athens on the road.
Liverpool
No Real Madrid, no Barcelona, no PSG, no Bayern. Atlético Madrid at Anfield is the hardest night and Inter away the most hostile trip. For Andoni Iraola, five weeks into the job and 2-2 at Newcastle on the opening day, a European campaign that does not begin in Munich is worth something.
Manchester City
PSG and Sporting at home, Barcelona, Porto, Leipzig and Lens away. City sold Rodri and Reijnders this summer and are chasing Enzo Fernández before Tuesday, so the midfield that plays these games may not be the one that was drawn for them.
Manchester United
Back in the competition and given Bayern Munich at Old Trafford, then Atlético Madrid away. Roma and Leipzig at home, Sporting and Villarreal away. Two former European champions and a night at the Metropolitano is not a gentle reintroduction.
Paris Saint-Germain
Barcelona and Roma at home, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Villarreal and Como away. Ferran Torres, signed from Barcelona for around €50 million a fortnight ago, faces his old club twice.
Bayern Munich
Arsenal at home, Atlético Madrid and Manchester United away, and the rest of it is manageable: Betis, Bodø/Glimt and Slavia Praha at the Allianz, Lille and Viking on the road.
Atlético Madrid
Bayern and Manchester United at the Metropolitano, Liverpool away. Diego Simeone gets three of the biggest nights available and four fixtures against sides he will expect to beat.
Aston Villa
PSG at Villa Park and Barcelona away, in the week Villa sold Ollie Watkins to Al-Hilal and bought Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea. Unai Emery's Europe is rarely quiet.
The other twenty six
The rest of the field is drawn but the home and away splits are not yet clean across every club, and reporting on the smaller sides contradicts itself in places. UEFA publish the full fixture list with dates and kickoff times on Saturday, and the remaining cards follow then, with kickoff times on them.
One name is missing from all of it: Chelsea, who spent more than anybody in Europe this summer, eleven first team signings for a combined €408 million, did not qualify.
The dates
Matchday one is 8 to 10 September, then 13 and 14 October, 20 and 21 October, 3 and 4 November, 24 and 25 November, and 8 and 9 December. The top eight go straight to the round of 16, ninth to twenty fourth play off for the other eight places, and everyone below that is out by Christmas.
