Ashley Cole, one of the finest left-backs of his generation and a Premier League and Champions League winner, has been appointed as the new manager of Italian Serie B side Cesena — his first senior managerial role.
The 45-year-old, who served as assistant coach to the England national team under Gareth Southgate and later Lee Carsley, has been building his coaching credentials quietly over the past few years. His appointment at Cesena, who are currently mid-table in Italy's second division, is seen as an ideal opportunity for Cole to cut his teeth in management away from the intense scrutiny of the Premier League.
Cole had spells at Chelsea, Arsenal, Roma, LA Galaxy, Derby County and Coventry City as a player, winning two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the Champions League during a decorated career. His technical knowledge of the full-back position in particular, at a time when the role is evolving dramatically across European football, is expected to be a significant asset in his coaching career.
The appointment was confirmed by Cesena's club statement on Monday, with Cole expressing his excitement at the challenge. Serie B is regarded as an excellent proving ground for young managers — Claudio Ranieri, for example, managed in Italy's lower leagues before his ascent to the top of European football.
Premier League clubs are expected to monitor Cole's progress closely. Should he impress at Cesena, a return to English football in a senior capacity may not be far away.
