What looked like a coronation procession for Cristiano Ronaldo and Al Nassr has suddenly turned into a nail-biting finale. Al Qadsiah — managed by Brendan Rodgers and fighting for Asian Champions League qualification — stunned the Saudi Pro League leaders 3-1 at Prince Saud bin Jalawi Stadium on Sunday, ending Al Nassr's extraordinary run of 20 consecutive victories across all competitions.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Al Qadsiah were the better side from the first whistle. Mohammed Abu Al-Shamat gave them the lead in the 24th minute with a sharp right-footed finish from a Christopher Bonsu Baah assist. Ronaldo came within inches of an equaliser shortly after — his signature curling strike rattled off the crossbar — but the flag was already up for offside. Joao Felix levelled in the 39th minute, finishing clinically after a Marcelo Brozovic through ball to make it 1-1 at half-time.
The collapse came in the second half. Musab Al-Juwayr restored Al Qadsiah's lead in the 55th minute after a defensive breakdown. Julian Quinones — the SPL's top scorer with 29 goals for the season, four more than Ronaldo's 25 — sealed it in the 78th minute after punishing another defensive error. Jorge Jesus was visibly furious on the touchline at full time.
RONALDO'S REACTION
Ronaldo did not score. He hit the crossbar, had an effort ruled out for offside, and struggled to influence the game. After the final whistle he posted on Instagram: "One mission. We keep working. TOGETHER!" — a defiant message that could not disguise the significance of the result.
WHAT IT MEANS
Al Nassr remain top of the Saudi Pro League on 79 points but Al Hilal — managed by Jorge Jesus's former club — are five points behind on 74, with a game in hand against Al Khaleej on Tuesday. If Al Hilal win that, the gap shrinks to just two points with three games left, setting up a monstrous Riyadh Derby on May 12 that could decide the title. If Al Hilal win all four remaining games including the derby, they are champions regardless of what Al Nassr do. Al Nassr's run-in: Al Shabab (May 7), Al Hilal (May 12), and one more fixture. They also face Gamba Osaka in the AFC Champions League 2 final on May 16.
What seemed like a formality two weeks ago has become one of the most dramatic title races in Saudi Pro League history. Ronaldo, 41, came to the Saudi league chasing silverware — and the title he needs most is now very much at risk.
