Viking, the Norwegian champions, drew 3-3 with Bayern Munich in their first league-phase home game in the Champions League. They led 2-0 at half-time, fell behind, and equalised on 90 minutes against ten men.
Two goals down
Viking scored after about 70 seconds. Zlatko Tripić took a corner and Gianni Stensness headed it into the bottom right corner. On 38 minutes they broke, Erik Botheim set up Peter Christiansen, and he scored left footed.
"Jeg er veldig stolt over å være en del av dette og få min første scoring," Christiansen told TV 2. I am very proud to be part of this and to score my first goal.
"It was a poor first half from us," Harry Kane said.
Kane, twice in six minutes
Bayern turned it around after the break. Kristoffer Haugen tried to clear and kicked Konrad Laimer in the box, and Kane scored the penalty on 54. Six minutes later he headed in Joshua Kimmich's corner. Luis Díaz made it 3-2 on 71 from close range after Laimer's pass.
Kane has now scored in nine Champions League games in a row, equalling Robert Lewandowski's club record.
Olise
Then Bayern lost their heads. Michael Olise was booked for a foul from behind on Henrik Heggheim, and about a minute later he threw the ball into the face of Viking captain Tripić. That was a second yellow card, on 73 minutes. According to AFP it is the first red card of his senior career.
Bayern had 65.5 per cent of the ball and 25 shots. With ten men they could not see it out. On 90 minutes Tripić crossed and substitute Herman Haugen turned it in at the far post.
"Jeg kommer aldri til å glemme det, jeg er utrolig stolt," Haugen said. I will never forget it, I am incredibly proud.
Kompany
Vincent Kompany did not defend his winger. "Diese Rote Karte ist überblöd," he said: this red card is super dumb. "Das haben wir deutlich angesprochen. Michael muss sich da besser im Griff haben." We have addressed it clearly; Michael has to control himself better.
"Hoffentlich gehört das zu einem Moment, wo man dann sagt, daraus haben wir gelernt und sind stärker geworden." Hopefully this becomes a moment where we say we learned from it and became stronger.
Kane agreed. "The red card changed everything," he said. "Michael ist total geknickt, aber die Verantwortung muss er übernehmen. Er muss daraus lernen." Michael is completely crushed, but he has to take responsibility and learn from it.
What it costs
Olise will miss Bayern's home game against Arsenal on 21 October. Bayern won their opener 5-0 against Bodø/Glimt, so they have four points. Viking lost 3-1 at Stuttgart on the first night and have their first point.
The draw follows a 2-2 at Augsburg on Saturday. Bayern are still unbeaten in the Bundesliga but have dropped points in two straight games.
