Real Madrid vs Girona: Arbeloa Must Win — But Can He Afford to Risk His Key Men?

Real Madrid host Girona tonight at the Bernabeu, seven points behind Barcelona with eight games left. The title is slipping away. So is Champions League progression. Arbeloa has a squad dilemma — and not much room for error.

Real Madrid have five days between tonight's La Liga game and Wednesday's second leg at the Allianz Arena. Four days, really, given travel and preparation. On the face of it, that is enough time to play tonight at full strength. In practice, the temptation to protect bodies will be real — and the decisions Arbeloa makes in the next hour will define the shape of their week.

The case for going full strength tonight is straightforward. Real Madrid are seven points behind Barcelona with eight games to play. They have already lost to Mallorca. They cannot drop more points. A win tonight keeps the faintest mathematical hope alive going into the run-in. A draw or defeat, and Barcelona can effectively begin planning the trophy ceremony.

The case for rotating is equally logical. Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham have all played heavy minutes in a punishing run of fixtures. The Allianz Arena on Wednesday night — against a Bayern side with momentum, playing at home, and with Harry Kane in the form of his life — will require everything Arbeloa has. Burning those players for a game against 12th-placed Girona carries real risk.

Arbeloa has resolved the dilemma, at least partially. He confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Bellingham, Camavinga, and Militao all start tonight. Mbappe and Vinicius are expected to continue leading the attack. Aurelien Tchouameni starts here because he is suspended for the Bayern second leg and therefore has nothing to lose by playing 90 minutes. Dani Carvajal and Fran Garcia come into the back four. Thibaut Courtois remains out. Rodrygo is out for the season with a knee injury. Franco Mastantuono is suspended.

Girona are not to be taken lightly on paper. They beat Barcelona 2-1 in February and held Real to a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture at Montilivi. But their away form has collapsed — no wins in five consecutive road games — and they arrive at the Bernabeu with little to play for at either end of the table. Mid-table is their destination regardless of tonight's result.

For Real Madrid, the minimum requirement is three points. The question is whether they can get them without paying a price they cannot afford on Wednesday.
