Cristiano Ronaldo wrote another chapter in football history on Tuesday evening at Houston Stadium. His sixth-minute opener against Uzbekistan made him the first player ever to score in six different World Cups β a record that may never be equalled. Portugal went on to win 5-0 in a dominant display that finally showed their true potential after the opening-day disappointment against DR Congo. Nuno Mendes, a Ronaldo second, an own goal and a Rafael Leao late strike completed the rout.
THE GOALS
Ronaldo made history inside six minutes. Joao Cancelo delivered a low cross from the right into the six-yard box and Ronaldo, arriving at the back post with perfect timing, swept the ball home with his right foot. A brief VAR check confirmed the goal β and confirmed the record. Six World Cups, six goals. 2006 Germany, 2010 South Africa, 2014 Brazil, 2018 Russia, 2022 Qatar, 2026 United States. No player in the history of the tournament has scored in more. The stadium rose in applause. Even the Uzbekistan supporters acknowledged the moment.
Nuno Mendes doubled the lead in the 17th minute with a moment of set-piece brilliance β scoring directly from a free-kick after a VAR check confirmed the ball had crossed the line. The Houston heat prompted a hydration break at the 22nd minute before Portugal continued to dominate. Ronaldo added his second of the night in the 39th minute to make it 3-0 at half-time β a tidy finish that capped a commanding first-half performance. Uzbekistan had a goal ruled out at the 30th minute after VAR detected a foul in the build-up.
The second half was more controlled. Uzbekistan's Abduvohid Nematov turned a Bruno Fernandes corner into his own net in the 60th minute to make it four. Rafael Leao, introduced as a substitute, sealed the rout in the 87th minute after good work from Bernardo Silva. Portugal were comfortable throughout β not once seriously threatened.
THE RECORD
Ronaldo's sixth-minute goal was the defining moment of the match and one of the most significant individual records in World Cup history. He first scored at a World Cup in 2006 against Iran. He scored at every tournament since β including four goals and the golden boot in 2022 at the age of 37. Now, at 41, in what he has described as his final World Cup, he has scored at six. Ronaldo said after the game: "These are moments you dream about as a child. I've always said I want to play as long as I can compete at the highest level. Tonight proved I still can."
HOW THE GAME PLAYED OUT
Portugal pressed aggressively from the first whistle, forcing Uzbekistan β World Cup debutants under coach Fabio Cannavaro β deep into their own half from the opening minutes. Martinez made a double change at half-time, bringing on Conceicao and Semedo for Pedro Neto and Cancelo. Joao Felix was excellent in the first half, creating two of the three opening goals and deserving more recognition in a game dominated by the Ronaldo narrative. Uzbekistan's captain Eldor Shomurodov, quiet throughout, curled an effort wide in the 38th minute that was their best chance of the evening.
