Porto 0-2 Manchester City: Haaland Scored Both and Donnarumma Never Had a Save to Make

Erling Haaland headed City ahead two minutes after half time, put in by Enzo Fernández, and settled it in stoppage time. Porto had five shots and none on target, so Gianluigi Donnarumma ended the night with no saves and a booking.

Porto had five shots in ninety six minutes at the Estádio do Dragão and not one of them was on target. Gianluigi Donnarumma finished the night with no saves to his name and a yellow card, which is a strange way to keep a clean sheet.

Haaland twice, and both from summer signings

Erling Haaland headed City in front on 47, from very close range into the bottom left corner, put in by Enzo Fernández. He settled it in the first minute of stoppage time, right footed from the centre of the box into the bottom right, after Rayan Aït-Nouri's ball in from a corner.

Two goals, two assists, both created by players City bought this summer. Fernández arrived from Chelsea for £125 million on deadline day. His first decisive act in the competition was a delivery into the six yard box for the striker.

Twenty shots to five

City had 20 shots and ten on target. Porto had five and none. Diogo Costa made eight saves and lost by two, which is what happens when the goalkeeper at the other end has nothing to do.

Porto played for the offside line and hoped: seven offsides, 47 long balls, and one interception all night against City's ten. City finished with 64.4 per cent of the ball and 640 passes to 354.

The bench looked like a different club

Josko Gvardiol went off on 48, eleven minutes after being booked, for Abdukodir Khusanov. Iliman Ndiaye came on for Antoine Semenyo on 62 and Elliot Anderson for Rayan Cherki in the same break. Mateo Kovacic replaced Ayyoub Bouaddi on 75, with Aït-Nouri on for Phil Foden alongside him.

That is five changes in a match City led 1-0 and never looked like losing, and one of the substitutes set up the second goal.

Three points and a booking for the scorer

Haaland was cautioned in stoppage time having scored both, Porto's Pablo Rosario in the same minute. Seventeen fouls and three yellows is not a quiet away performance, and City still won the opening match of the league phase without conceding a single shot on target.
