Mallorca 2-1 Real Madrid — La Liga Matchday 30, Estadi Mallorca Son Moix

Real Madrid arrived in Palma needing three points to stay within touching distance of Barcelona. They left with nothing. Vedat Muriqi's stoppage-time goal completed a stunning comeback win for relegation-threatened Mallorca, extending the gap at the top of La Liga to seven points before Barcelona's game against Atletico kicked off later in the evening.

FORMATIONS AND LINEUPS

Mallorca lined up in a 4-4-2 under Martin Demichelis. Leo Roman started in goal behind a back four of Pablo Maffeo, Martin Valjent, Omar Mascarell and Johan Mojica. Samuel Costa and Manu Morlanes anchored the central midfield with Pablo Torre and Sergi Darder providing width. Zito Luvumbo and Vedat Muriqi led the attack. It was a compact, pragmatic setup designed to absorb pressure and hit on the counter — precisely the strategy that would prove decisive.

Real Madrid set up in a 4-3-3 under Alvaro Arbeloa. Andriy Lunin started in goal in the continued absence of Thibaut Courtois, who remains out with a quad injury. The back four consisted of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Antonio Rudiger, Dean Huijsen and Alvaro Carreras. Manuel Angel, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga made up the midfield three. Arda Guler operated in the number ten role between the lines, with Brahim Diaz and Kylian Mbappe as the front two.

The most notable selection decision was Vinicius Junior on the bench. Arbeloa confirmed before the game that Vinicius had been rested ahead of Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final first leg against Bayern Munich at the Bernabeu. Mbappe, making his first start since February after a knee injury, was handed the responsibility of carrying the attack alongside Brahim. Federico Valverde served the first game of his suspension following his red card in the Madrid Derby on March 22. Eder Militao returned from a long hamstring injury on the bench, as did David Alaba and Jude Bellingham.

FIRST HALF — MALLORCA STRIKE AGAINST THE RUN OF PLAY

Real Madrid dominated the first half without finding a breakthrough. Leo Roman was the difference, making a string of saves to keep Mallorca level against a side that controlled 64 percent of possession across the match and registered 15 shot attempts.

The danger Muriqi posed was evident from early on. Antonio Rudiger blocked a powerful Muriqi effort inside the box in the 25th minute in what proved a crucial intervention. The game was drifting towards a first half stalemate when Mallorca struck.

In the 41st minute, Morlanes received the ball in the box following a quick transition from a Madrid corner. The move cut Real Madrid open completely and Morlanes finished coolly past Lunin to send Son Moix into raptures. It was against the run of play and underlined everything Demichelis had set up to exploit — Madrid's high defensive line leaving them vulnerable to transitions.

SECOND HALF — MADRID PUSH, MILITAO EQUALISES, MURIQI WINS IT

Arbeloa brought on Bellingham and Vinicius Junior after the break in an attempt to add creativity and directness. The substitutions shifted the momentum. Madrid pushed with urgency and Leo Roman continued to produce saves that kept his side in front.

It looked like Roman's heroics would be rewarded when Militao, returning from injury, powered in a header from a corner in the 88th minute to level the score. It was a moment of joy for the Brazilian centre-back, who had been out of action since December. The Etihad euphoria felt like it was arriving at Son Moix for a very different reason.

But Mallorca were not done. In the first minute of stoppage time, they broke with devastating speed from a Madrid set piece. The ball found Muriqi in space and the Kosovo striker fired past Lunin to complete a stunning reversal. The stadium erupted. It was Muriqi's 19th goal of the season. Demichelis sprinted down the touchline.

TACTICAL BREAKDOWN

The absence of Valverde was more significant than Madrid anticipated. Valverde's engine, his ability to cover ground and screen the backline while also breaking forward, is not easily replicated. Camavinga and Tchouameni offered quality but the balance was different without the Uruguayan's relentless pressing and box-to-box output.

Manuel Angel, making what appeared to be his full debut in the starting XI according to 101 Great Goals, showed promise but was tentative in the crucial central areas. Madrid consistently had the ball but lacked the incision to break down a well-organised Mallorca block.

Mbappe's return was mixed. He was involved, created moments, and looked sharp at times — notably he scored for France during the international break — but the chemistry with Brahim and Guler needs games. This was only his second appearance since February and the match sharpness was not quite there in the critical moments.

The real story was Demichelis's defensive organisation. Mallorca recorded only six shot attempts and two on target, yet won the game. Leo Roman made five saves. The counter-attacking setup was executed perfectly. When Madrid lost the ball high up the pitch, Mallorca's front two of Luvumbo and Muriqi were already running.

WHAT IT MEANS

Madrid remain in second place but the gap to Barcelona is now potentially seven points depending on the result of Atletico vs Barcelona later on Saturday. They have the Bayern Munich UCL quarter-final first leg at the Bernabeu on Tuesday — a far bigger priority — but this defeat is damaging both psychologically and mathematically.

Mallorca climb out of the relegation zone temporarily with 31 points. Muriqi, with 19 goals, continues to be one of La Liga's most underrated strikers. Demichelis gets his biggest win as Mallorca manager.

For Arbeloa, the result is a reminder that league form remains unpredictable. The UCL now becomes everything.
