Liverpool 2-2 Nottingham Forest: Two Games, Two Comebacks, Two Points

Liverpool trailed twice at Anfield and rescued it twice, through Alexander Isak and then Víctor Muñoz on 82 minutes. They had 70 percent of the ball and Forest had the better chances, which is now the pattern of Andoni Iraola's opening fortnight.

Saturday, 29 August 2026

Andoni Iraola has managed Liverpool twice in the league and been behind in both, and rescued a point in both. At Newcastle it took a penalty in the 99th minute. At Anfield it took Víctor Muñoz on 82.

The scoreline flattered them

Dan Ndoye put Forest ahead on 24 from Morgan Gibbs-White's pass, and by half time the visitors had created 1.29 expected goals to Liverpool's 0.25, with three clear chances against none. That is not a team riding its luck for ten minutes. That is forty five minutes of being second best in your own ground.

Alexander Isak equalised on 60 from close range, laid on by Cody Gakpo. Ten minutes later Gibbs-White put Forest back in front from the penalty spot. Muñoz levelled it on 82, right footed from the right of the box, from Florian Wirtz's pass.

Seventy percent of the ball and not much with it

Liverpool finished with 69.6 percent possession, 556 completed passes to 192, and thirty crosses to Forest's seven. What that bought was thirteen shots and four on target, one more shot than a side that spent the afternoon defending.

Forest cleared the ball 34 times and hit 73 long balls. Oliver Glasner's plan was to sit in, let Liverpool have the ball in front of them, and go through them on the counter, and it worked twice.

The same shape of problem as Newcastle

Iraola presses high and commits people forward, and both league games have followed the same script: territory, chances conceded on the break, a late rescue. Forest are now unbeaten in four league meetings with Liverpool and have won their last two visits to Anfield.

Four Liverpool players were booked, including Alisson on 69 and Ronald Araújo, on loan from Barcelona, two minutes after coming on.

Gakpo assisted, four days from the deadline

The man who set up the equaliser has spent the window agreeing personal terms with Tottenham while Manchester City talk to his agents, and Liverpool will only sell if they sign two wingers before Tuesday. He was taken off on 71 for Rio Ngumoha.

If he leaves, the player who created Liverpool's only goal from open play this afternoon will have gone before the next matchday.

Where it leaves them

Two points from two matches, two goals conceded in each. Liverpool have not yet lost and have not yet led at any point in the league season.

Muñoz, 20, has now scored the goal that saved a point at Anfield in his second league start. That is the encouraging half of a fortnight that has been mostly warning signs.
