Barcelona went a goal down in Istanbul and won 4-1. That is ten wins from ten in all competitions this season, eight in LaLiga and two in the Champions League, and they share the top of the league phase on six points.
Seven changes and a false nine
Hansi Flick changed most of the side that beat Getafe on Saturday. Pau Cubarsí and João Cancelo came into the back four, Éric García moved to right-back, and Pedri and Fermín López joined Rodri in midfield. With Raphinha still injured and Gabriel Jesus on the bench, Dani Olmo played as a false nine between Lamine Yamal and Anthony Gordon.
"That's why I've put Dani as a nine, he can also control the ball," Flick had said before the game. "We also have to manage the load of minutes, since the next game is on Saturday."
Galatasaray strike first
Barça had the ball from the start, but Galatasaray scored on the break. On 28 minutes Rafael Leão ran at the defence and set up Aleksey Batrakov, whose shot took a deflection off Cancelo and went into the bottom left corner. Galatasaray had a second ruled out for offside soon afterwards, with Barış Alper Yılmaz caught beyond the line.
Cancelo made up for the deflection two minutes before half-time. Olmo found him on the left of the box and he finished into the far corner.
Three minutes
The game was settled at the start of the second half. On 50 minutes Yamal swung in a corner and Fermín headed it into the bottom right corner. Three minutes later Yamal set up Gordon from the right of the six-yard box. It was Gordon's first Champions League goal for the club, three days after his first Barcelona goal against Getafe.
Karim Adeyemi, on for Gordon, made it four on 65 with a left-footed shot from the left of the box. It was his second goal of this Champions League campaign, after scoring against Feyenoord on the opening night.
"Lamine es un amigo y un gran compañero," Fermín said. "Cuando la tiene él, siempre busco el desmarque porque sé que me busca y me ve. Es el mejor del mundo." When Lamine has the ball I always make the run, because I know he is looking for me and sees me. He is the best in the world.
The numbers
Barcelona had 71 per cent of the ball and 22 shots, 11 of them on target, against Galatasaray's five. Galatasaray's goalkeeper made six saves.
One record went the other way. According to Foot Mercato, Barça have now gone 17 Champions League games without a clean sheet, the longest run in the club's history.
What they said
Flick was pleased but wanted more in the final third. "Estamos muy contentos con el resultado. En la primera parte creo que también hemos jugado bien, han tenido una y la han marcado, pero conseguimos volver y remontar," he told Movistar. We are very happy with the result; they had one chance and scored it, but we came back.
On Yamal, who had two assists: "Ha estado excelente, no ha marcado hoy pero sí que ha dado la oportunidad en dos o tres goles. Es un jugador increíble y muy importante para nosotros."
Pedri had a point to make about the forwards. "Al principio de temporada se decía que no teníamos gol y hemos demostrado que tenemos gol," he said. At the start of the season people said we had no goals in us, and we have shown we do.
Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk said the second goal had turned the night. "Çok erken 2 gol yiyince maç bir anda değişti," he said: conceding two goals so early changed the match in an instant. "Skor dezavantajı arttıkça takımımızın morali de biraz düştü." As the deficit grew, our morale dropped.
Galatasaray have no points from two games. Barcelona play again in LaLiga on Saturday.
