Australia produced one of the upsets of the World Cup's opening weekend, beating Turkey 2-0 at BC Place in Vancouver to go level with the United States at the top of Group D. Nestory Irankunda — Australia's youngest-ever World Cup goalscorer — opened in the 27th minute, and Connor Metcalfe sealed it in the 75th. Turkey, returning to the World Cup for the first time in 24 years, were outworked and outfought from start to finish.
THE GOALS
Australia broke the deadlock in the 27th minute through teenage winger Nestory Irankunda. The 19-year-old — the youngest player in the Socceroos' squad and making his World Cup debut — received a pass inside the Turkish half, drove at the defence and found the bottom corner with a composed right-footed finish past Ugurcan Cakir. Irankunda celebrated by punching the corner flag — a tribute to his idol Tim Cahill, whose iconic corner flag celebrations defined a generation of Australian football. He told reporters afterwards: "It's a dream come true. We worked extra hard, we fought till the end."
Turkey pushed for an equaliser through the second half. Arda Guler, returning from his hamstring injury suffered at Real Madrid, tested Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach with a long-range free-kick in the 63rd minute that Beach parried away. Harry Souttar's header toward the bottom corner was brilliantly kept out by Cakir. Yunus Akgun picked up a yellow card for a reckless challenge.
But Australia doubled their lead in the 75th minute through Connor Metcalfe, who weaved into shooting range from the edge of the box and unleashed a bouncing strike into the bottom right corner. Cakir had no chance. The goal effectively ended the contest. Souttar then made several crucial late blocks as Turkey threw everything forward in six minutes of stoppage time, denying multiple Turkish attacks to preserve the clean sheet.
HOW THE GAME PLAYED OUT
Australia were compact, direct and dangerous on the counter — exactly the kind of disciplined performance that Tony Popovic had demanded throughout qualifying. Turkey dominated possession in spells but created little of quality in open play, relying almost entirely on set-pieces and Guler's individual moments. Without the injured Hakan Calhanoglu for large portions of the game, Turkey's midfield lacked control. Guler tried hard but could not create the decisive moment. His World Cup debut, after missing the end of the Real Madrid season with a hamstring injury, ended in defeat.

WHAT IT MEANS
Australia go level with the United States on three points at the top of Group D after matchday one — the best possible start for Popovic's side. They face the USA next on June 20 in Seattle in what is now a winner-takes-all clash for top spot. Turkey must regroup quickly — they face Paraguay on June 20 before a final group game against the USA. For Turkey, it is a chastening return to the World Cup after a 24-year absence. The team that finished third in 2002 — with Hakan Sukur's iconic fastest World Cup goal in history against South Korea — must now win both remaining games to have any realistic chance of progressing.
