Enzo Maresca had been Manchester City manager for twenty four seconds when he conceded his first goal. Riccardo Calafiori scored the fastest goal from an opening whistle in the history of the Community Shield, and by the time City had steadied themselves they were two down and the afternoon had already decided what it was going to be. Arsenal won 3-0 in Cardiff.
Twenty four seconds
There is no gentle way to begin a new era and Arsenal did not offer one. Calafiori struck before Manchester City had settled into any shape at all, inside the first minute, and the record books took it as the quickest opening-whistle goal the fixture has produced. For a side rebuilding under a new manager, conceding before the first pass is completed is the worst possible introduction: every plan for the afternoon needed rewriting immediately.
Havertz and Ødegaard settle it
The second arrived on 28 minutes, Kai Havertz heading past Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Arsenal went in at half time two goals up without having been troubled. The third, three minutes after the restart, was the one that will sting most in Manchester. Martin Ødegaard ran unchallenged into the City area, sold a dummy and finished. Nobody laid a challenge on him on the way through.
Haaland had seven touches
Erling Haaland, back only recently from World Cup duty, touched the ball seven times before he was withdrawn on 53 minutes. That is the statistic that describes the match better than the scoreline does. At the other end David Raya was barely asked a question all afternoon. City did not lose this because their finishing deserted them, they lost it because they never reached the areas where finishing matters.
The first day of the post-Guardiola era
This was Maresca’s first competitive match in charge, Pep Guardiola having moved on at the end of last season. Both managers on the touchline learned under Guardiola at the Etihad, which gave the occasion its subplot, and both had been generous beforehand. Maresca said his aim this season was to close the gap to Arsenal after finishing seven points behind them. Mikel Arteta went further, calling his opposite number as good as Guardiola and backing him to do an "unbelievable job".
Neither statement looked foolish afterwards, because a curtain-raiser in August is not evidence of very much. But the gap Maresca described did not look seven points wide in Cardiff.
What Arsenal take from it
"I think we showed our level today, that we are ready. We are serious," said Ødegaard, and the champions have reason to feel that way. They scored inside a minute, controlled the game without ever appearing to strain, and got through the afternoon with their goalkeeper untested.
The caveat is worth stating plainly: this is the Community Shield, a trophy that has never predicted a season. Arsenal host Coventry City on Friday to open their title defence. Manchester City are at home to Bournemouth two days after that, and Maresca gets a second first impression.
